Owner Surrender
When an owner needs to investigate the possibility of surrendering a dog, it can be a very stressful, painful, time consuming and scary process. It's not easy to find the perfect home to adopt a dog. Ontario Canine Rescue can help.
First we need to know why you are considering giving up your pet? What is the problem?

Behavioural Problems
We work hard to help people understand that animals are a lifelong commitment, and we hate to see people give up on their pets. First and foremost, we must remember pets are living creatures, capable of fear, love, pain, loneliness, and joy. They should never be considered disposable property but instead they should be considered members of the family. Please consider all alternatives before you surrender your dog and review all the above links for help. Sometimes circumstances force you to surrender your pet. Understanding the difficulty of such a separation, we try to make the process as friendly as possible.
You could take your pet to a local SPCA or an Animal Control facility but it is a known fact that many owner surrender dogs entering this type of environment never make it out alive. As well, dogs kept in these environments often develop emotional and behavioural problems.
Free to a good home adds - Most people have good intentions when they advertise a cat or dog as "Free To Good Home". They care what happens to the animal and are not interested in making money. All they want to do is find a nice family that is willing to give the pet a loving, responsible home. The tragedy occurs when the animal is mistakenly put into a situation where it is neglected, abandoned, abused, or even sold for lab experimentation. Giving any pet away is misguided. People tend not to value what they don't pay for. A free pet is a disposable pet!
PLEASE do not just turn your pet loose "out in the country". This is one of the cruellest fates any domestic pet could meet. The fear, abuse, and suffering they will encounter is heartbreaking if they even manage to survive at all.
Ontario Canine Rescue offers you a compassionate and understanding alternative that allows your surrendered dog to remain in a loving home environment where they will be treated as one of the family for as long as it takes to find that perfect new home. Our rescue will access your pet and then offer them further training, medical treatment or behaviour modification if needed, to ensure it will be a respected and capable companion in its new home.
While in our care, our foster parents continue to give your dog the same love and attention that you would be giving to your dog and with our in-depth screening and matching process you are assured your dog will be adopted by the most suitable family. As well, we ensure that any chosen adopter fully understands the lifetime commitment they are making to the pet prior to their adopting.
All potential adopters are required to complete an adoption application, and must be approved prior to being invited to meet with a specific pet. Once accepted, the adopter must then sign a contract that guarantees the pet will be treated humanely and with respect for the rest of its life, and that if at any time they are unable to continue caring for the pet it will be returned to Ontario Canine Rescue.
Owner Surrender Policies and Procedures
If you are an owner who needs to surrender your dog for placement, please find below our policies and procedures.
1. Once we receive your Owner Surrender application you will be contacted by one of our associates who will access your dogs eligibility for placement and will advise you of any surrender fees that may be applicable to your case. They will also explain the dog adoption process.
2. Ontario Canine Rescue will not accept any owner surrender dog which is vicious or has a known bite history or a history of being overly aggressive with people. We can not, in good faith, adopt a vicious dog into a family, or provide placement into foster care.
3. All surrendered dogs must be legally signed over to Ontario Canine Rescue prior to entering our foster program. Before we can post the dog for adoption, owners are required to sign a Surrender Contract prior to their dog being physically accepted into our program.
4. All surrendered dogs become the property of Ontario Canine Rescue
5. Ontario Canine Rescue requires all owners to provide a complete medical history on their dog and permission given allowing us to speak with the dogs veterinarian.
6. Acceptance of an owner surrendered dog will be made as space and urgency dictates.
Pet Owners who place their dogs through our rescue are not only guaranteeing their own pet's future but are also helping to save the lives of other unfortunate canines as proceeds from adoptions are used to aid dogs from local shelters and pounds that would otherwise have been euthanized.
